چکیده

This review describes the subjective experience of visual aura in migraine, outlines theoretical models this phenomenon, and explores how these may be linked to neurochemical, electrophysiological, psychophysical differences sensory processing that have been reported migraine with aura. Migraine with persistent visual aura.

CLINICAL HISTORIES Case 1.—This 74-year-old woman was referred by an ophthalmologist with an 8-week history of squiggles in her left field of vision of both eyes inferior more than superior. During the day, if her eyes were closed, she would see kaleidoscope-type letters with a colored background. The visual symptoms were constant except for several hours in the evening when there was total res...

Cortical spreading depression: origins and paths as inferred from the sequence of events during migraine aura.

Patients with migraine with aura often experience a variety of visual and somatosensory phenomena and disturbances of higher cortical functions. Analysis of these alterations may provide important information about the involvement of different cortical regions in cortical spreading depression (CSD). We report five cases of migraineurs who experience unusually abundant clinical phenomena during ...

The relation between migraine, typical migraine aura and "visual snow".

OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between the phenotype of the "visual snow" syndrome, comorbid migraine, and typical migraine aura on a clinical basis and using functional brain imaging. BACKGROUND Patients with "visual snow" suffer from continuous TV-static-like tiny flickering dots in the entire visual field. Most patients describe a syndrome with additional visual symptoms of the follo...

Activation of meningeal nociceptors by cortical spreading depression: implications for migraine with aura.

Attacks of migraine with aura represent a phenomenon in which abnormal neuronal activity in the cortex produces sensory disturbances (aura) some 20-40 min before the onset of headache. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cortical spreading depression (CSD)--an event believed to underlie visual aura--can give rise to activation of nociceptors that innervate the meninges--an event ...
